The Cows · Page 15

Rows of white calf hutches, each with a calf in a small pen.

Most of us no longer live our lives out in the green fields but instead on concrete floors under electric lighting, behind walls, and in feedlots up to our knees in mud and manure.

We are no longer one or two or even ten, but often hundreds or even thousands on each farm.

They are no longer farms but rather factories.

It follows that industrial farmers have become factory workers, and like the cows, they live a kind of slavery.

The economy of scale dictates that farms grow bigger and bigger and petrol-run engines replace human hands.

This also means that living creatures like cows and humans are treated as part of a mega machine called industrial agriculture.
